Monday 9th September
We started our very first lesson in Level 3 performing arts in our college theatre (Margret Armstrong Theatre) with the second years and playing a few games such as (wah, ninja and splat) just to get us warmed up and get us ready and set for our very first proper lesson.
We then started to select a few of the students like for example (4 or 5) and started to put together a scene with just those students. Then the other remaining students would join in and try to be apart of that scene which would expand it into a more bigger scene which has now been created by all of the students. For example, we had to create a scene in a supermarket where some of the students were workers in the shop and then once the others came in, the scene became much more intense because it went from a normal day at a supermarket to a full armed robbery. This shows us that once you are in that scene you have to quickly become any character which would then cause the scene to get moire bigger and more interesting because of how much is going on.
After that we then moved into smaller groups which gave us a chance for us to get to know the second years a bit better, we then started to improvise another scene but this one was completely different, this one was given to us by out tutor 'Kelly' to which when we were performing that scene we had to do a freeze frame. This is so weer could pause on a specific scene and look at what we were doing and see what was going on in that scene that we were doing.
We were then asked to get into pick a certain fictional antagonist from any play/film which we were asked to do research on and also we would audition to be for the ghost light tour that we are doing at Stockton globe in October. When researching about the certain character that we wanted to audition for, we had to look at things like (backstory, what made then the way they are, their style and their accent). So for example we went with 'Bill Sikes' from 'Oliver Twist' in our group and started to look at his backstory and tried to get as much information as we could about the character and why we want to audition for him.
Tuesday 10th September
We started to learn about the methods of stanislavski and also the given circumstances which focuses on a certain piece of the play/performance such as (Who, What, When, Where, Why, before and after and also objective and obstacles which are the main ones that Stansislavski focused on.
After that we were then given a script inspired by Stanislavski, we went into pairs and labelled each other as A and the other being B which were two different characters who we had to portray. When reading this script and rehearsing them, we had to come up with a before and after scene to connect with the story and would also have to fit in with the beginning and ending of the script to make sure that it all makes sense.
When learning about Stanislavski, one of his tactics that he had was called 'the seven layers of tension which include (exhausted, laid back, neutral, alert, suspense, passionate and tragic) which shows how a character can build up from slow to quicker emotions. We tried practising the seven layers of tension ourselves where we started off walking incredibly slow which would start to increase the more it got higher and higher.
Wednesday 11th September
We started the morning off by playing a few games just to get us warmed up so that we were ready for the start of the lesson with the second years.
After our warm up, the level four performing arts students joined us where we started to focus on the ghost light tour which we are dong at the globe theatre in October, where we would have to choose a famous villain/antagonist that we would want to audition and perform as in the performance. When picking a good villain or antagonist to portray, we had to make sure that we knew all about that person such as ( clothing, personality and accent). We looked at where about we wanted it to be displayed in the globe theatre and where we wanted our character that we chose to be placed and noticed by the audience. So for example we chose Bill Sikes and Nancy from 'Oliver Twist' to focus on and we thought that the staircase near the globe would be a good place as to where he murders her.
After looking at different victims and villains such as (Lady Macbeth, The witches and Bill and Nancy), we then chose which characters that we wanted to go for and portray in the ghost light tour and started to share our ideas with everyone else and our tutor 'Kelly'.
We then did our first movement/dance class with Abbie where we did some warm ups and learned some dance moves along with a few exercises to get us prepared for what we will be doing in the future, and make us ready for what is to come i future lessons and to get us prepared as an actor.
Thursday 12th September
We started off with our usual warm up in the morning before being introduced to something we are doing called a 'Carousel' which is where we will switch tutors for the morning and afternoon with 'Kelly' and 'Tom'. We first went to Tom to learn about 'Bertolt Brecht' and how he saw theatre in a different way by breaking the fourth wall and using the 'Verfremdungseffekt' to create a new era for the world of panto/theatre
After that we did a singing and vocal warm up to help with our singing which would help us prepare for if we had to sing in an audition in the future. These vocal warm ups involved (lip movements, tongue movements and berating exercises'). We were also showed what the best and worst things were for the lungs in order to help our vocals such as (staying hydrated, breathing in hot water, honey and tea and lip movements which were the helpful things for the lungs. The worst things would be (smoking and vaping) which destroys mainly the lungs. This is good to know so that we know what can improve our vocal chords and what will make them worse, just so that we are aware.
